Syria strikes: Site of chemical attack hit again

Syria strikes: Site of chemical attack hit again

Until Monday, U.S. officials had said they weren't sure whether Russian Federation or Syria operated the drone.

The official said that a drone operated by Russians was flying over a hospital as victims of the attack were rushing to get treatment. But he suggested that Mr. Trump was seeking a global political response for regime change from USA allies as well as Russian Federation, which he said needed to reevaluate its support of Syria. It said the woman killed had fled to the town from her hometown of Latameh in central Syria.

As Tillerson landed in Moscow, senior White House officials briefed reporters on declassified US intelligence they said disproved Russia's claim that rebels were responsible for the chemical weapons.

The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said that Russian Federation is responsible for the attack because Syrian dictator Assad was able to carry out the chemical attack knowing that he would be backed by Russian Federation. The official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on intelligence matters and demanded anonymity, didn't offer concrete proof and others in the Trump administration cautioned that no final determination of Russia's foreknowledge had been made. It is the first official trip to Russian Federation by a member of President Donald Trump's Cabinet.

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations are gathering for a meeting given urgency by the chemical attack in Syria and the USA military response.

But as lawmakers called on Trump to consult with Congress, Trump administration officials sent mixed signals on the scope of future US involvement.

The statement says Alfano urged Iran to use its influence with the Syrian regime "to avoid new attacks, completely eliminate chemical weapons and assure a cease-fire".

On Thursday evening, President Trump said he wanted all "civilised nations" to join the U.S.in "seeking to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria".

US officials previously have said Russians routinely work with Syrians at the Shayrat air base where the attack is supposed to have originated.

'Who paid for' rallies seeking release of tax returns
In the modern political era, Trump is the first US president and first major party nominee not to release his full tax returns. In West Palm Beach, some of those marching said they'd taken part in protests nearly every weekend since Trump was sworn in.

There has been no Syrian retaliation so far for the cruise missile attack, which destroyed or rendered inoperable more than 20 Syria air force planes, he said.

The "targeted military strike" on Syria, which plausibly is an act of war and thus puts Trump in violation of the USA constitution and global law, came upon the heels of an emotional appeal by US envoy to the United Nations Nikki Haley. If the volatile US leader can assure Russian President Vladimir Putin that the missile strikes will be strictly confined to President Assad's forces and avoid any Russian personnel, then perhaps this highly inflammable, high risk game can continue briefly.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who is visiting Moscow this week to meet with his Russian counterparts, said Sunday he plans to ask them about their commitment to ensuring Syria has no chemical weapons.

In Iran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the USA missile strike was a "a strategic error, and a repeat of the mistakes of the past", the state news agency IRNA reported. He did not rule out additional strikes if Assad continued to engage in atrocities against rebel forces with either chemical or conventional weapons.

The allegation of Russian foreknowledge is grave, even by the standards of the now dismal U.S.

"We will respond strongly to any aggression on Syria", the two Syrian allies said in a joint statement that flashed in a banner on Syrian state television.

"I think the Russians were caught off guard (by the USA strikes)", Hertling said.

Taken together, the comments of Haley and Tillerson suggested senior members of Trump's foreign policy team may be seeking to shape the president's views, with Haley more opposed than Tillerson to Assad remaining in power.

"It is in the vital national security interest of the United States to prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons".
