Soyuz space capsule carrying American, Russian blasts off

Two days before the launch, NASA astronaut Randy Bresnik shared a time-lapse video of the Soyuz rocket being transported to the launch site.

Veteran cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin and rookie flight engineer Jack Fischer streaked into orbit aboard a Russian Soyuz ferry craft Thursday, chased down the International Space Station and glided to a smooth docking to complete a six-hour rendezvous.

She will be occupying the third seat on the Soyuz MS-04 spacecraft when Mr Yurchikhin and Mr Fischer return to Earth in September. Because this week's just launched unpiloted "SS John Glenn" Cygnus resupply ship is eagerly awaiting its chance to join the station and deliver almost 4 tons of science experiment, gear and crew provisions to stock the station and further enhance its research output.

It was the first two-person launch to the ISS in over a decade.

"Mom, it's like me being in Texas, depending on where we are going around the Earth, I'll be just as close", he said.

Yurchikhin marks his fifth space launch with this event. They moved into the ISS on November 2, 2000, and stayed for 136 days. He also joined three long-duration ISS missions in 2007, 2010, and 2013.

Vimy 100 ceremony at cenotaph draws hundreds
Last week memorial benches to honour the battle of Vimy Ridge were unveiled at the Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham Legion branches. Our victory at Vimy is regarded by many as the moment when Canada stood on its own; as the moment when Canada became a nation.

Fischer, whose nickname "2fish" came from his former Air Force squadron having another guy named Fischer (as in the Dr. Seuss book, "One Fish, Two Fish."), is on his first flight since being chosen as a NASA astronaut in 2009.

When their time at the ISS is over, astronauts are taken away by Soyuz capsules.

NASA said that The US president will give her a congratulatory phone call for her record-breaking stay.

Station commander Peggy Whitson, 57, in the midst of her third long-duration mission, is due to arrive on Monday to beat the 534-day record for cumulative time spent in space by a USA astronaut. Two crew members, though, are now breaking the record: NASA astronaut Scott Kelly (photo) and Roscosmos cosmonaut, Mikhail Kornienko.

Over the next four-and-a-half to six months, Fischer, Yurchikhin, and the other astronauts aboard the space station will conduct about 300 experiments on subjects such as creating lighter and stronger alloys, new medicines, and testing new technologies for exploration. She will return home on board a Soyuz capsule in September. "So we have a great friendship", he resumed.

The agency explained it is seeking to cut costs on supply missions prior to the installation of a new module to expand the Russian section of the orbital lab at the end of 2017 or in early 2018.
