Samsung may launch Galaxy C7 Pro in India today

The company on Friday announced estimated first-quarter operating profit of 9.9 trillion won, up 48.2 percent on year.

Running high on confidence, Samsung has set a target of selling at least 18 million units of its recently launched flagship smartphone Galaxy S8 within a period of 3 months of its launch.

The Apple Inc rival has rapidly recovered from last year's costly failure of its fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 device, despite a political scandal involving Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee who appeared in a Seoul court on Friday facing charges including bribing ousted president Park Geun-hye.

The company surprised analysts in January when it predicted a similar rise in earnings for the final quarter of 2016, even though operating profits for its smartphone division had plummeted by 98% in the third quarter alone as the Note 7 fiasco took hold. The same was about 9.56 trillion won in the first quarter of 2013. Samsung scrapped its flagship smartphones a year ago after they overheated and caught fire, leaving billions of dollars in financial damages and hurting its reputation.

LG did not elaborate on its earnings estimates and will provide detailed financial results at end-April.

Witnesses called police, who arrived a short time later and found the victim in the back seat of the limousine, she said. Craig says the 19-year-old man is still in custody and it's not known right now if he will face any charges.

Ms Park was arrested last week, after being impeached, and sent to a detention centre, although she has not yet been formally charged.

Lee, who was arrested in February, has been charged with paying almost US$40 million to the now-impeached president's close friend Choi Soon-Sil, allegedly as bribes to secure policy favours. Lee has previously denied the charges, saying that while Samsung did give money to the foundations, he didn't know Choi controlled them nor did he expect anything in return.

Samsung Electronics has had a strong start to the year, raking in what's expected to be its second largest quarterly profit in history.

The company's components business, consisting of display panels and memory chips, is likely to have helped boost the company's profit in the first quarter.

Earlier this week, word got out that Samsung was going to launch a version of the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8 Plus with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of onboard storage.
