Rafael Nadal eases into Monte-Carlo quarters

Andy Murray threw away a 4-0 lead in the deciding set of his third-round match against 15th-seeded Albert Ramos-Vinolas to crash out of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday.

The Serbian is the top seed left in the tournament following world number one Andy Murray's shock defeat to Albert Ramos-Vinolas earlier on Thursday.

Ramos-Vinolas had started brightly to win the first set convincingly 6-2 before Murray turned the tables by securing the second set with the same scoreline. Fifth seed Marin Cilic advanced to the last eight after beating ninth seed Tomas Berdych 6-2, 7-6 (7/0) yesterday.

The Spaniard, taking part in his fifth clay court tournament this year, will now face the victor of the match between Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas and Frenchman Lucas Pouille.

"It's good I'm able to play like that".

In his press conference, Ramos-Vinolas talked about how happy he was, but added that his 2016 quarterfinal appearance at Roland Garros, if only barely, remained the highlight of his career.

It was more a case of Murray being unable to play his natural game.

Serbia's Novak Djokovic returns the ball to Belgium's David Goffin, during their quarterfinal match of the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters tournament in Monaco, Friday, April, 21, 2017.

Nadal, who is chasing a 10th title here, next faces unseeded Argentine Diego Schwartzman - who eased past Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-0.

Victory for Vinolas-Ramos marked the first time the 29-year-old from Barcelona, who reached last year's French Open quarter-finals, had got the better of a world number one.

The Briton, who had a first-round bye, had not played competitive tennis since injuring his elbow in March and began with three double faults as he lost his opening service game on Wednesday. "It's just that sometimes there should be maybe a little bit more tolerance and understanding for certain situations like that one, where it was very long point, at 6-5 in the third".

He broke Cilic in the third game and clinched the first set when Cilic's cross-court backhand went out. "I started slow and wasn't serving well at the start".

But Cuevas reeled him back in and served for the match at 5-4.

Goffin downed No. 6 Dominic Thiem of Austria 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3, and No. 11 Lucas Pouille of France was 3-0 up when countryman Adrian Mannarino retired with a hip problem.
