Marijuana Safer Than Opioids, but Moms Shouldn't Use

According to the researchers at The Marist Institute for Public Opinion in the United States, most Americans are not especially anxious about marijuana use among the youth. Instead, their main worry is smoking cigarettes (24 percent), followed by using marijuana (21 percent), drinking alcohol (21 percent), having sex (17 percent) and cheating on a test (12 percent). Similarly, 52% of Americans aged 70 or older said they would lose respect for an athlete if they were admitted marijuana users.

Conducted between March 1 and March 7, 2017, the poll was accomplished by surveying 1,122 adults via phone.

Overall, researchers said the study shows that adults who have some experience with marijuana are less likely to be concerned about negative effects.

Commissioned by Yahoo News and performed by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, the survey queried a representative sample of 1,122 people on cellphones and landlines, asking a series of questions that delved into their feelings and perceptions about a plant that has gained public acceptance as voters increasingly approve more liberal marijuana use laws in many states despite the fact that it remains a controlled substance under federal law.

Marijuana tops the list of concerns for Americans who have never tried marijuana.

Discovering that 76% of those surveyed believe that regular tobacco use is far riskier than regular marijuana use, the new poll examines the ever-changing dynamic between "Weed & The American Family".

With a new administration in the White House, and the rapidly shifting landscape of state-level marijuana legalization, it's useful to know where American adults stand on marijuana-related issues.

Four states (California, Massachusetts, Nevada and Maine) approved recreational marijuana usage in the 2016 election, pushing the total of states where pot is legal to eight plus the District of Columbia.

Older Americans were less likely to support marijuana use in sports. Fifty-eight percent of the parents also think that their children would not approve if they learn that their parent enjoyed using marijuana for recreational goal.

Many Americans, though, do not think using marijuana to ease pregnancy symptoms is acceptable. The academy suggests that parents remind kids that marijuana can cause abnormal brain development, and that teens who regularly use it can end up with mental health disorders like addiction, depression, and psychosis. Among the survey results, a majority of the respondents said that using a doctor's prescription of an opioid, such as Vicodin or Oxycontin, for pain is more of a health risk than using a doctor's prescription of marijuana.
