Leapfrog Hospital Safety Report: Patient Safety Improving, but Critical Work Remains

Consumers can also download the free Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade mobile app for Apple and Android devices. The grade was assigned by The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the USA health care system.

Leapfrog said that since the ratings began in 2012, there have been significant strides in improving patient safety, such as a 21 percent decline in medical conditions acquired in hospitals; increased use and improved function of computerized systems through which doctors order care; and millions of cases in which potential harm to patients was averted. President John Sigsbury says quality and patient safety are not just things they think about in their spare time - they are both cornerstones in the minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day care of their patients. "We recognize and appreciate "A" hospitals' vigilance and continued dedication to keeping their patients safe". "It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees and medical staff, and it underscores the hospital's ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of all who enter our facility". The Leapfrog Group calculates a Safety Grade for approximately 2,600 general, acute-care hospitals for which there is sufficient publicly available data.

Three baby koalas stolen from carer's home in Brisbane
Whoever took the koala joeys has been urged to hand them into a veterinary surgery, the RSPCA or a local police station. Mr Beatty said animal cruelty charges carry a maximum penalty of three years' jail and a $220,000 fine.

"Straight "A" hospitals are a rare breed".

Among Leapfrog's top safety picks is Pikeville Medical Center, the only Kentucky hospital to get straight As since the rankings began in 2013. A state inspection of University Hospital past year found that shortcomings in nursing had endangered three patients, and nurses and doctors told inspectors that staff shortages put patients at risk. "So far, we've been pleased with the increase in public awareness and hospitals' commitment to solving this awful problem".
