The Iraqi army said Sunday 2900 Islamic State members were killed over the past few days in western Mosul as USA -backed operations continue to clear the remaining districts of the region from militants.
Iraqi armed forces have captured parts of Al-Tanak neighborhood in northern Iraq's Mosul city, a police official told Anadolu Agency Thursday.
US-backed Iraqi forces are now battling IS militants in the more densely-populated western half of Mosul, with more than half of that area having been retaken.

"The Daesh terrorist gangs tried to block the advance of our forces by using shells filled with toxic chemical material, but the effect was limited", said an Iraqi military statement, calling ISIS by the Arabic acronym.
Some 400,000 people are trapped in the Old City while more than 300,000 have fled fighting since the operation started in October, officials have said.
"We're doing everything we can but this has been a long battle and the assault on the old city hasn't started", Grande warned, pointing out that the battles in the western side of Mosul is very different than in the east.
