German police arrest suspect in Borussia Dortmund bus attack

German police arrest suspect in Borussia Dortmund bus attack

In a statement, the federal chief prosecutor said the 28-year old man, a dual German and Russian national identified as Sergei V., had bought options on Borussia Dortmund's stock (BVB.DE) before the attack.

The suspect had booked into the team's hotel in Dortmund and placed three explosives, packed with shrapnel, along the route the bus would take to reach the stadium, prosecutors said. Spanish soccer player Marc Bartra underwent wrist surgery and a police officer was treated for shock.

Police confirmed on Friday morning that a police tactical response unit had arrested a man named only as Sergej W in the Tuebingen area, 30km south of the city of Stuttgart and 450km south of Dortmund.

"He is charged with attempted murder, setting off explosions and causing serious physical injury".

Shares of Borussia Dortmund fell 2% on the day of the attack, rose 1.75% on April 12, then dropped another 3.8% on April 13.

The statement also revealed the suspect's plans to benefit financially from the attack, purchasing shares or so-called "put options" that he hoped to sell at a pre-determined price.

According to the prosecutor's office, 15,000 shares of Dortmund stock were purchased using the IP address of team hotel the day of the attack. Dortmund ultimately lost over the two legs, sending Monaco into the last four.

Captain Marcel Schmelzer said the team hoped to learn further details about the background to the attack.

It may never be clear why Hernandez would kill himself just days after he was cleared of two additional murder charges. Lloyd's body was found on June 17, 2013 in a park less than a mile from Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Mass.

A Borussia Dortmund bombing suspect has been accused of attempting to profit from the attack through shorting shares in the German football club.

He was later cleared of involvement following a brief investigation.

The explosives, which went off shortly after 7pm (5pm GMT), were hidden in a hedge and were set off as the bus passed.

Citing unnamed investigators, Bild said police believed the suspect was capable of building a remotely-triggered bomb, having won an educational award in electronics and engineering in 2005.

Now it has emerged that hotel staff saw the suspect calmly enter the restaurant there and order a steak while the rest of the guests fled in panic after the detonations.

Following the attack, three identical letters were found near the scene of the attack and suggested a possible Islamist extremist motive, but investigators had doubts about their veracity.

Police believe the explosives may have been hidden in a hedge near the vehicle park the L'Arrivee Hotel and Spa on the outskirts of Dortmund.
