Fresno gunman targeting whites chose 3 men at random

Vickie Farr places a candle for Tuesday's shooting victims at a memorial of candles and flowers outside Catholic Charities on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in Fresno, Calif. Police believe 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad's killing spree was a hate crime, not an act of terrorism. Each of the victims was White, Muhammad is Black.

Mr Hughes came home to see a body draped in a blanket on the pavement leading to his front door.

Three people were killed by a gunman in Central California Tuesday.

After Kori Ali Muhammad learned that he was wanted for the death of a security guard last week, he wanted to take out as many other white men as possible, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said. Police say Muhammad first approached a PG&E truck on the 300 block of North Van Ness Street and shot the passenger inside repeatedly. The driver wasn't hit and sped toward the police department, but his partner couldn't be saved.

He fired at another person but missed before shooting dead a 37-year-old pedestrian carrying a bag of shopping.

Muhammad "is not a terrorist but he is a racist", Dyer said.

"These were unprovoked attacks", Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

Two Latina women and a child crossed paths with Muhammad but were luckier.

After spending the night on top of the 7-Eleven, Muhammad waited to make sure officers left the area and then climbed down Friday morning, the police chief said.

Muhammad faces four counts of murder and two of attempted murder, according to Dyer. Muhammad said he didn't want police to be forced to shoot him and that he is not a coward.

The Giants are going to proceed with caution placing their starting backstop on the seven-day disabled list. The Giants' Buster Posey lays on the ground after being hit by a pitch in his helmet on Monday.

Muhammad fired 16 rounds in less than two minutes during his deadly spree.

Lieutenant Mark Hudson, a police spokesperson, told AFP the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been contacted about the killings and it was too early to say whether they were terror-related.

"This is exclusively based on race", he said. He got on the ground once he saw the police.

Muhammad, who changed his name from Kori Taylor as a teen, talked a lot about black pride and black nationalism on his Facebook page. A flurry of posts emerged in the past day. He also posted about "white devils" and on several occasions, posted status updates that included the phrase "Allahu Akbar". Muhammad, he added, had a long criminal history including weapons charges and drug infractions. Police say Williams was unarmed.

In 2005, he was indicted on charges of cocaine possession with intent to distribute, and possession of two rifles and a semi-automatic handgun.

He claimed insanity and his lawyer requested a psychiatric examination, saying Muhammad "appeared eccentric with some freaky beliefs". The lawyer also said he'd had "at least two prior mental health hospitalizations".

The attorney who represented Muhammad in that case did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

Public records list Muhammad as Cory Taylor and other aliases with addresses in Fresno and Sacramento. The women were Latinas, he said.

"He would give his shirt off his back for anybody", she told the newspaper. I'm so sad to hear what happened there. "I'm just kind of shocked".
