Force India F1 Team Boss Arrested In London

"Mallya was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud", the statement said. "He was arrested after attending a central London police station, and will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later today, 18 April". Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 8,000 crore to various banks, had fled India on March 2, 2016. "Usual Indian media hype. Extradition hearing in court started today as expected", a defiant Mallya tweeted after he was released on a bail bond of Rs 5.4 crore.

The only extradition so far, of Samirbhai Vinubhai Patel, wanted in connection with a 2002 Gujarat riots case, in October 2016 did not exactly reflect a fresh approach in London.

In fact, Mallya is supposed to remain confined at his property at Hertfordshire close to London, and not apply for global travel documents or be in the possession of any. His Indian passport, revoked after he left for London, will be with Scotland Yard.

Interestingly, the controversial businessman is also required to keep his mobile phone switched on, fully charged and on his person 24 hours a day.

India had revoked Mallya's diplomatic and regular passports in April previous year. "It obviously gives us a lot of confidence in this case, but there is a long way to go before the actual extradition happens and he (Mallya) faces the courts here. Vijay Mallya was treated like the son-in-law of the country", Rao said.

Man arrested in connection with death of runner due in court
The body of the 27-year-old NY resident and account manager for Google was found in the woods after she didn't return from a run. He drove during 4 a.m.to 11 a.m. shifts, including weekends, on delivery routes through the Princeton area, Travers said.

"He is detained for an hour and he is granted bail". Due to the involvement of investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), bankers later dropped all talks of settlement with Mallya and his representatives. Separately, the ED is probing him for alleged money laundering, specifically for diversion of the loans he took for Kingfisher Airlines which has gone kaput. The CBI had registered the case in July 2015 and filed the chargesheet on January 24 this year. He was arrested on 9 August a year ago and, on 22 September, home secretary Amber Rudd signed the extradition order. It was alleged that Mallya took a loan of Rs 6,027 crore from these banks between 2005 and 2010 but "deliberately didn't pay while conspiring with group companies and promoters". The loan amount along with interest stands at over Rs 9,000 crore.

Why did BJP government take 3 years to make a request for extradition of Mallya only on 9/2/2017 to UK Govt for the first time?

Why is BJP Govt shying from moving against Lalit Modi, who escaped to United Kingdom even before Mallya? In January, an Indian court ordered a consortium of lenders to start the process of recovering the loans.

As per the existing extradition treaty agreement between India and the UK, Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed on September 22, 1995, extradition of an individual could be refused on numerous grounds, including that it should be proved beyond doubt before the English courts that the offences levelled against the individual in the country seeking extradition are also considered as serious offence as per the British law also.
