'Fast and the Furious' on road to record global debut

The record was previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $529 million.

That figure blows away the previous overseas record holder, "Jurassic World" with $316.6 million. It was the first major Hollywood picture to shoot in Cuba for more than 60 years, according to the studio.

Universal Pictures' eighth installment from the franchise, which stars Vin Diesel, placed first with an estimated $100 million over three days in theaters in the US and Canada, ComScore Inc. said in an emailed statement Sunday.

There are important reasons for the fall off.

Well, another year, another extremely improbable vehicle chase and debut from the "Fast and Furious" franchise. But, this time emotional resonance was not same due to the absence of Paul walker.

Variety Magazine suggested its a sign that a franchise built around muscle cars and odes to the importance of family is growing more global in scope.

The movie beat "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($528.9 million) for the all-time best global opening weekend.

Tomi Lahren Cryptically Accuses Glenn Beck Of 'Misconduct'
In addition to publicly silencing Lahren, the suit seeks to recoup monetary damages and attorney's fees from Lahren. Those comments definitely didn't sit well with Lahren's conservative audience, resulting in social media backlash.

Then there was the off-screen drama. That number is definitely in reach for The Fate of the Furious at this point.

The Universal film, starring Vin Diesel and directed by F. Gary Gray, raked in an estimated $532.5 million in its global box office debut, CNN reported. The film follows the crew as they grapple with Diesel's betrayal and alliance with a mysterious hacker (Theron).

Disney's live-action version of "Beauty and the Beast" managed to round out the top three in its fifth weekend in Korea.

The movie did exceptionally well in China, racking up $135 million in its first two days of release. The live-action adaptation of the 1991 animated fantasy came in third on the North American chart this weekend, adding an estimated $13.6 million to its $454 million US and Canadian total while making it the 12th highest grossing film of all time (unadjusted for inflation) domestically. Leading the way is China, where the film grossed $65.6 million on Friday, the biggest single day of all time in that market.

Rounding out the top five were "Smurfs: The Lost Village" with $6.5 million and "Going in Style" with $6.4 million. Warner Bros.' "Going in Style" finished fifth with an estimated 6.35 million USA dollars in its second weekend. It has grossed $23.4 million, almost matching its $24 million production budget. Expected to roll it all in, Fast and Furious 8 is expected to cross 50-crore mark as its opening weekend collection.

The Lost City of Z did nicely for Amazon Studios (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Bleecker Street, opening to $112,633 from 4 theaters in NY and Los Angeles for a location average of $28,158.
