Continuing with its winning streak, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to wrest power in the Congress-dominated Latur civic body and retain its power in the Chandrapur municipal corporation in Maharashtra. The drought-hit district of Maharashtra, considered to be the fiefdom of the late chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, handed 40 of the 70 municipal corporation seats to the BJP, Hindustan Times reported.
Voting for 201 seats in the three municipal corporations was held on Wednesday.
His eldest son Amit Deshmukh is a sitting MLA from Latur city constituency while youngest son Dhiraj Deshmukh is an member of the Latur zilla parishad. In fact, BJP could not win a single seat in the 2012 polls while Congress was reduced to 28 from 29 seats. Till now, Congress was in power in this 66-member civic body.
Chandrapur is the home district of the senior BJP leader and Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar. In 2012 polls, the BJP had not won any seat in Latur.
