Chaffetz leaves door open to not finish term in House

Romney's son, Josh, has expressed interest in running for the office.

He's also not so definitive about a political resurgence down the line; Politico reported Chaffetz's political team has begun snapping up URLs associated with potential future runs.

Representative Jason Chaffetz is the chair of the extremely influential House oversight committee. He has been an outspoken voice in Congress since he was elected in 2009. He says the state of Utah needs to figure out how that would work.

Chris Karpowitz, co-director at Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, said Chaffetz's decision to bow out is somewhat surprising but eases the path for a governor's race. But Herbert said he's hopeful Chaffetz will finish out the rest of his term.

"After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time", Chaffetz wrote.

Allen said Chaffetz's decision doesn't change her platform but she hopes it give Democrats a better shot in the heavily Republican 3rd congressional district, which stretches from suburban Salt Lake City to desert towns in southeastern Utah. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be reelected by large margins. He is a good friend, terrific public servant and a colleague that will be greatly missed in the House of Representatives and in the Utah Delegation.

Make no mistake, Chaffetz must resign from his Chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

"Chairman Chaffetz' behavior has always been beneath the dignity of the office he holds and he should step down as Chairman of the Oversight Committee immediately", said Tyler Law, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman.

Most recently, he commented on President Trump's unsubstantiated accusation that former president Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"Chaffetz not seeking re-election will raise more questions about this", Watson tweeted, quoting another tweet that suggested the Russians have "kompromat" against Chaffetz.

Jason Chaffetz married his wife Julie in 1991. They have three children together. He announced he will not run for any political office in 2018.

Before running for Congress, Chaffetz worked for politician and diplomat Jon Huntsman 2004 as campaign manager in Huntsman's successful race for Utah governor, then as chief of staff after Huntsman took office.
