The U.S. Senate on Friday narrowly confirmed President Donald Trump's pick to the Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch.
The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage (NOM) released this statement celebrating the confirmation of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court.
But many Democrats argued that Gorsuch's record was too conservative and that he failed to answer key questions about his judicial record during his Senate hearing last month.
There are nine judges who sit on the Supreme Court, and they hold the position for life.
"We're all human beings", Gorsuch told senators, "but the judge's job is to put that stuff aside and approach the law as you find it".
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, touted the judge's confirmation, contending that Gorsuch will make a great addition to the high court and is "going to make the American people proud".
It was the longest period a seat has remained unfilled on the Supreme Court since during the American Civil War in 1862. Many Republicans bemoaned reaching that point, too, but they blamed Democrats for pushing them to it. The confirmation was achieved by dismantling the 60-vote threshold historically required to circumvent a filibuster on Gorsuch's appointment.
The nuclear option allowed Gorsuch to be nominated with a simple majority - he was confirmed 54 to 45 in the 100-seat Senate.

"I want to congratulate Judge Gorsuch on this significant achievement".
He did acknowledge, though, that an email he sent criticizing lawyers at big firms for representing detainees being held by the US military at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba was "not my finest hour". He was the anchor of the Court's conservatives, and became a hero for conservative thinkers and organizations. If Trump gets to replace any of them, the court could swing much further to the right.
Had Hillary Clinton won last November's election (as many polls indicated she might), the choice would have been hers.
