BP well in Alaska leaking gas after unknown incident

The well is operated by BP Exploration Alaska Inc., a subsidiary of BP.

The crude spray was discovered Friday morning, and capped early Sunday.

Responders say the crude oil spill appears to be limited to the drilling pad. They were waiting for the well to be plugged to determine if oil reached nearby snow-covered tundra.

In Anchorage, Alaska, a large team of oil crews are busy to stop the leakage in a state's oil well, which gone rogue after an unpredicted explosion occurred in the well just after evasion of natural gas, said a federal official.

Attempts to bring a leaking well house under control at a BP drill site in Prudhoe Bay have been unsuccessful, according to the latest situation report released from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. Hilcorp Alaska has discovered several oil and natural-gas leaks in pipelines, but ice made had it impossible to fix the leaks.

Fossil fuel companies have long eyed portions of Alaska's North Slope now off-limits to oil and gas production, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, home to over 200 species of migratory birds and the last onshore area for polar bear dens.

BP set up a unified command with state and federal regulators to address the leaking gas and oil.

The safety valve at the top of the well has stopped one leak, but a second leak from the bottom continued as of Saturday afternoon. Alyeska is a joint partnership led by the North Slope's top producers, BP Plc, Exxon Mobil Corp. and ConocoPhillips. The damage to the well is extensive: it has risen three or four feet out of the ground and its pressure gauge has been severely damaged, according to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) on Saturday.

The statement says pressure in the well was monitored all night and excess pressure was released from the well.
