Authorities: Tennessee student, teacher found in California

Speaking on Good Morning America, he also said his daughter, who can not be named for legal reason, will need therapy and her family will ensure she gets the help she needs.

A former Tennessee high school teacher accused of abducting a 15-year-old student in March was arrested on Thursday in northern California where the teenager was also safely recovered, authorities said.

Authorities say they were found at a commune in Cecilville, California, on Thursday. Acting U.S. Attorney Jack Smith says that if convicted of the federal charge, he faces at least 10 years in prison.

He said Thomas appears to be healthy and unharmed, but authorities are concerned about her emotional and mental state, and will continue to view her as a potential witness and victim in the case.

District Attorney Brent Cooper told news outlets Tad Cummins takes medicine to control his blood pressure and would likely need a refill. The remote, mountainous area has limited cellphone service and the terrain is hard to traverse. Authorities had a hard time getting to the cabin, as there was snow on the ground, TBI officials have said.

April 3, 2017: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation determined photos shared by a police agency in Nebraska are not Thomas and Cummins.

The six-week search that began March 13 in Thomas' hometown of Columbia, Tennessee, spanned the nation and brought in more than 1,500 tips as law enforcement and civilians kept an eye out for the silver Nissan Rogue Cummins and Thomas were last seen in, and it was the Rogue that ultimately helped law enforcement find them.

The school's investigative files provided to the AP by the attorney show that both Cummins and the girl denied kissing. Columbia is about 45 miles (70 kilometers) south of Nashville.

Court documents filed by Thomas' family claim Cummins groomed the 15-year-old, threatened and stalked her, after the school suspended, then fired Cummins.

The report recommended that the girl be taken out of Cummins' class and that he be reprimanded to uphold his professional responsibility.

"I feel a little amusing because there were all kinds of indications that there was something a little amusing going on never occurred to me that she was 15 years old".

The Maury County Public Schools Facebook post comes in the wake of complaints from the girl's family that the school system did not respond properly after a student at the Culleoka Unit School reported seeing teacher Tad Cummins kissing the 15-year-old student. The teen's cellphone showed brief contact with Cummins' phone number on January 31, court records state. His picture circulated the country after an Amber Alert was issued March 14, and authorities believed he had fled, taking one of his students - Elizabeth - with him.

March 13 - Thomas goes missing, and Cummins later identified as a suspect. Court records show that Jill Cummins sued her then-missing husband on the grounds of irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct.

"There aren't words in the English language to describe the level of relief and elation experienced by the Thomas family", Whatley said. The couple has two children together.
