Australia scraps visa for skilled foreign workers

"Australian workers must have priority for Australian jobs, so we are abolishing the 457 visa, the visa that brings temporary foreign workers into our country".

"Responding to a query regarding the new Australian visa policy, the Official Spokesperson said that the Government is examining consequences of the new policy in consultation with all stakeholders".

Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hopes to make significant changes to 'putting Australians first'. The highest proportion of these foreign workers come from India (24.6%), followed by the United Kingdom (19.5%) and China (5.8%).

For those who are already in Australia under the 457 visa programme, they will not be affected by the change.

On April 18, the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the government would scrap 457 Visas.

Australian Industry Group chief Innes Willox said the existing 457 visa system was opaque and open to abuse and he expected the new scheme to be more transparent. The four year visa will also require a police check and mandatory labour market testing.

The 457 visa category enables Australian firms to hire skilled foreigners for four years due to shortage of native workers with same skills.

After this abolition, Australia will now only welcome skilled workers.

The Australian PM said that the move to abolish the visa, now used by more than 95,000 temporary foreign workers, aims at tackling the growing unemployment in the country.

Part of the allure of the 457 visa has been the eventual prospect of acquiring citizenship. According to Turnbull, more than 200 jobs would be delisted under the two-year stream visa. However, allegations have been raised that employers misuse the 457 visa to bring in cheap labour rather than to genuinely fill skill shortages.

Technically speaking, the 457 visa is a temporary one for skilled workers, but it was one of the few that offered a path to citizenship for those who continued to work in the country. To cater to those needs, the new temporary visa will be "specifically created to recruit the best and the brightest in the national interest", he said.

"We think there needs to be a real tightening of the temporary work migration visa".
