Aaron Hernandez's brain is being 'illegally' withheld from CTE study, lawyer says

The investigation also found cardboard jammed into the door tracks of Hernandez's single-inmate cell, possibly to impede entry.

About an hour after he was found, Hernandez was pronounced dead at UMass-Memorial Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster, according to a statement from the Massachusetts Department of Correction.

Law enforcement sources tell NBC Boston that Hernandez was found with the words "John 3:16" written on his forehead.

The family of Aaron Hernandez plans to donate his brain to scientists to determine whether he had Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, the degenerative brain disease linked to a number of National Football League athletes. Previous reports have maintained that the former N.F.L. player did not leave a suicide note. "Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window", read the statement. Many friends and former colleagues were searching for an explanation to the tragic end of a young man whose football skills at one point earned him a five-year, $40m contract extension with the NFL's top franchise.

"They're being vague about what their intentions are", Baez said. Currently, investigators are said to be looking at the possibility Hernandez smoked synthetic marijuana before taking his own life.

Mr. Hernandez, 27, was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell shortly after 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

"And he was in really good spirits so for this to happen, we're shocked and we still don't believe that he took his life and we still believe there's a lot of foul play going on", said Randy Garcia, Aaron Hernandez's cousin.

Massachusetts State Police has now launched an investigation into the suicide at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Centre in the town of Shirley. "Those who love and care about him are heartbroken and determined to find the truth surrounding his untimely death", he added. The attorney has filed a joint wrongful death lawsuit against the Hernandez estate on behalf of both families.

Hernandez's death comes less than a week after he was acquitted of two further murder charges, relating to the 2012 shootings of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado.

Hernandez's fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins Hernandez, filed a complaint Wednesday on behalf of the daughter she had with Hernandez.
